Hard Surface Floors:
Non-Resilient flooring describes materials such as ceramic/quarry tile, marble, granite, terrazzo, concrete, brick, and slate.
Resilient flooring describes materials such as vinyl composition tile, rubber, linoleum, sheet vinyl, and resin.
Each floor surface category requires specific methods and techniques. Cleaning materials and solutions are specifically designed for each flooring surface.
Cleaning: Sweeping or dust mopping removes debris, loose dirt, and particles from the floor. Damp or wet mopping removes spots, spills, and soil from the floor.
Polishing: Spray buffing and burnishing are the most common methods of polishing. Spray buffing is both a cleaning and polishing technique. Buffing can remove water spots, light soil, black barks, and produce a high gloss shine.
Restoration: Non-resilient floors can be machine scrubbed and rinsed in some instances. A sealer would be applied. Polished stone requires a very specialized technique to remove scratches and restore the original lustre.
Resilient floors require the removal of existing finish and application of floor sealer and finish. Typically 4–6 coats are recommended.
